DIY Removals Can Pay For Themselves

It’s said that the most stressful experiences in life include getting married, having a baby, experiencing bereavement and moving house.Hopefully the first three are only going to be experienced one time or maybe twice. But the latter will probably be repeated at regular intervals throughout your adult life! Many people seem to prefer DIY removals these days, hiring a van or a larger car to shift treasured possessions with the sort of care they deserve. This approach is a good alternative to hiring expensive shippers or removal companies.

Aside from the cost, at least you can be sure your precious items won’t simply be slung in the back of a van!Problem is that van hire rates, at least for the size of vehicle you are likely to need, are similar to those removal company costs. You can’t always rely on whatever bundled insurance protection may be on offer when hiring a car or van, especially if you intend to move home with it.

The increased availability of temporary car insurance has made a cheaper version of DIY removals possible.  Approaching a colleague with a van or a large estate car capable of transporting your worldly possessions to ask if you can borrow their motor may test friendships, but is certainly easier on the wallet!   Short term car insurance is easy to arrange and can be remarkably good value for money. Not only will it reassure your friend that their vehicle is fully covered with no impact on their no claims bonus (thus making it more likely that they’ll agree to lend it to you), but there are also insurances that will cover the contents of a trailer as well as the vehicle itself.

One day car insurance also means that you can use the borrowed vehicle without risking any no claims discounts on your own insurance policy.  Of course, it would still be desirable to offer to pay for the petrol used for the favour borrowing the car or van, so there are some additional costs associated with the “borrow a mate’s wheels” approach. If you are really fortunate, they may even offer to chip in with some muscle to help on the day of the move!
