The Everett Clinic And Advanced Technology

Overview

The Everett Clinic has systems in place to insure that your care is based on the latest evidence-based research and accompanied by the most advanced technological care. Expert surgeons use cutting edge techniques, such as laparoscopy, 3D image-guided surgery, robotic assisted surgery and more. Also, advanced data sharing systems allow doctors to communicate easily and provide you with the best possible care. In this interview, Dr. Goodman addresses surgery, The Everett  Clinic, and advanced technology.

Interview with Dr. John Goodman, MD, The Everett Clinic

INTERVIEWER: I know that the surgery and your approach have changed over the years. How has that changed? And how is The Everett Clinic cutting edge in terms of conducting gall bladder surgeries these days?

DR. GOODMAN: First of all, the equipment has modernized and we’ve kept up with the equipment and we’ve been fortunate in that respect. We started off with fairly primitive laparoscopes and video systems and now we have some of the best. We’ve also figured out that there are certain ways to avoid serious complications and among ourselves we discuss when we use those techniques and when they shouldn’t be used. We try to standardize certain parts of the procedures so that it’s the safest for the patients and the outcomes are the best.

INTERVIEWER: Is there anything about the equipment that you’re using now that you want to elaborate on at all?

DR. GOODMAN: Well, for example, we started off with simple one chip cameras, and we now have modern high definition three chip cameras so that we have much better vision and illumination. We have less problems with the lighting system inside the abdomen when it’s used, which are inherent to laparoscopy in general.

INTERVIEWER: So what is it about the leadership of The Everett Clinic, or the model of care, that allows you to have a better surgery practice?

DR. GOODMAN: I think The Everett Clinic embraces change as the way to improve, rather than fight change. And, when you look at everything The Everett Clinic has done, whether it’s bringing in electronic medical records, digital imaging into the office, computers into every examining room, different types of systems of drug management, requiring doctors to actually justify the CTs they were ordering.

We realized that we have to lead in those changes and not be the victims of them. That has lead to us developing a general surgery team to cover the hospital services, working in concert with the office surgeons who also are integrated with that, bringing in electronic medical records, bringing residents into our office, because we realize that if you don’t become part of the change you become a victim of it.

And we realize that change is not necessarily bad. In medicine it seems to be a good thing; it benefits both patients and doctors.
