Are Your Genes Limiting Your Potential?
There is a point where your muscle cannot be built upon anymore and that point is decided by the genes we get from our parents. That being said, there are still plenty of positive effects that a well structured workout regime and a balanced diet can have on your physique. So, you may never become the champ, but there is reason you shouldn’t look as good as you can.
You can predict with some accuracy how well your body will handle the stimulation of your workouts by studying your natural body shape or somatotype. There are three separate groups of somatotypes and they are divided as follows:
Endomorphic body shape
Endomorphs are characterized by short powerful arms and a thick torso.
Mesomorphic body shape
With broad shoulders, very little body fat and very strong limbs and torso Mesomorphs make ideal bodybuilders.
Ectomorphic body shape
Ectomorphs are taller than average with substantially less visible muscle or body fat.
The ideal body builder needs to have wide shoulders, narrow hips and strong arms, so obviously this favors the body shape of the mesomorph. There are two other inherited roles that come into play as when trying to determine your muscle building potential, one is the density of your muscle fibers and the other is neurological efficiency. Neurological efficiency dictates how well you nervous system works in conjunction with your muscles and muscle fiber density determines how build you muscles can potentially grow. This is only relevant in extreme situations, when an individual is blessed with these genetic traits they have the ability to utilize up to 50% of their muscle mass compared to the 30% an average person can. These traits can give the added bonus of boosting an individual’s workout and increase the chance for enhanced muscle gain.
The sport is still as competitive as it is because there remains no easy way to test for these traits and that inspires competitors to push past their current limits and strive to become stronger. It is still very possible to achieve your own personal targets without these traits as long as you continually strive to improve yourself.
