Typical Stress Effects On People

Tuesday, March 9th, 2010

While each individual is unique in how they respond to the effects of stress, there are certain major stresses in life, which if all occur together, can send a healthy person into a depressive state or create the inability to cope with the simple things in life. A marriage, birth of a child, moving to another place or loss of close contact with previously connected family and friends can all bring about sudden stress symptoms. Past ways of coping, plus one’s emotional makeup will predict how one will be affected by nervous tension and strain.

There are usually physical effects of too much stress that will become apparent. Your immune system will usually weaken as so much of your energy is spent dealing with whatever is causing the stress, thus making it very easy to get sick. People will usually get aches and pains, have irregular bowel movements, and lose a lot of energy and stamina. These symptoms of stress tend to be the most obvious and can usually be dealt with easily with a little bit of rest and a reduction in stress levels.

Emotions are a part of our nature. The effects of stress can magnify your own negative emotions and thus cause you to lash out at others, even if you are normally very nice and kind to your family and friends, and even strangers. With a prolonged stress level, you can begin to show symptoms such as anger, restlessness and blaming others for your current situation. Just telling someone that you are under a lot of stress doesn’t always help. They may understand at first, but as your behavior changes even more, they may start avoiding you, thus leaving you isolated and feeling unloved. Depression and forms of self-destruction may also occur.

Other effects of too much stress can last well after the ending of whatever caused the stress in the first place, such as behavioral symptoms. Here you can see your diet changing, as you eat too much or too little, your sleep patterns can suffer as well, and you can develop nervous habits that are not necessarily serious in nature, but that do not come across well with others. These symptoms of stress are the hardest to stop as your body becomes used to them. In worst case scenarios, strong dependencies on substances like alcohol, cigarettes and drugs can be created.

It takes time to work through the effects of stress. Dealing with stress is very important for us physically, emotionally and socially. If the initial cause of the stress is removed or lessened over time, it is still very important to look at yourself and see how you are now handling anxiety. If you are repeating past behaviors, then it is time to find new tools to use. Time will help with healing your body and mind as long as you take care of yourself. Learning to deal with resentments will make it easier to re-program your mind and find healthier ways of managing stress when it occurs again.
